The first thing that you need to be aware of is that getting a boat does not mean that it has been refurbished or in some other way redone. The only thing that “repossessed” means is that at some point in time, the boat was taken by authorities. Why it was taken can cover a wide variety of reasons. The boat might have been put up for collateral as a loan that was then collected by the bank, or it might be repossessed by financing agency when the dues were not paid in a timely fashion. Check your online listings to see what is available, but if you travel far afield, remember to think about how to factor in transportation. As with any other large purchase, be cautious.

The first thing you have to decide is what type of water you’ll be fishing on. A suitable boat for small ponds and backwaters would not necessarily be the best choice for near coastal conditions where bigger seas might sneak up on you. Similarly a river fishing boat capable of handling wild whitewater might be a disappointing performer on larger, open lakes. A boat that will have to do double duty as a fishing and waterfowl hunting boat will be very different from a boat that will be doing double duty as a fishing and water skiing boat. Spend some time identifying the uses of your boat first – what kind of water, how fast, how many people – these are what will dictate the best type of boat for you to build.

If you primarily intend to fish in rivers, especially smaller, fast moving rivers, you’ll want a drift boat, that is one that is primarily intended to drift down rivers. There are two types of these, the Western style, sometimes called, McKenzie River drift boats, and Midwestern style drift boats less for canyon shooting in the mountainous West, and more for smaller rivers and streams common throughout the US. The Midwestern style can be rowed much faster and with more control than the Western types intended only for drifting downriver, where the oars are only used for keeping the boat pointed downriver.

If you intend to fish on lakes, bays and protected waters, you have a choice of quite a few designs. If you intend to both row and use moderate power, there are few better choices than a Carolina style dory. These easy-to-build boats get up and plane easily, carry lots of load, are quite stable and yet still may be rowed in a pinch.

If you want to go fast, under primarily engine power, and still plan to mostly fish in wide rivers, lakes, bays, etc., a semi V or full V-bottom power boat may be your best choice., These come from smaller – two passenger sizes, easily pulled on a trailer behind a small car, all the way to big, 6 or 8 passenger models that can also handle sea conditions. Another option for this kind of conditions is the Pacific power dory. These highly stable and efficient hulls can outperform commercially made fiberglass models and can be built for a fraction of what a new boat costs.

If you would like a man-powered or small engine boat you can toss in the back of a pickup or on a car roof and head to a stream, lake, bay or bayou, consider one of the ultra-light boats with plans available. They come in various shapes, from prams and dories, to canoes and kayaks. Larger sea-kayaks are suitable for fishing and waterfowl hunting. Using modern materials some of these boats can weigh as little as 40 pounds so can be carried to the water with one hand.

Finally, if you want to use your boat to fish in the ocean, you’ll be faced with very different conditions than in protected waters so need to look for a boat designed for ocean conditions. V-bottom Carolina dories, Pacific power dories, and V-bottom center console boats are all suitable for coastal conditions, and also will outperform heavier factory made boats and may be used with smaller, more economical engines.

For offshore conditions, very specialized craft are called for. Grand Banks dories are some of the most seaworthy boats ever designed. They’ll power through any weather, though they’re no speed demons, and can also be sailed. In 1876 (the 100th year birthday of the USA) an 18-foot open dory, named the Centennial was used on the first single-handed North Atlantic crossing from New York to England. Other candidates for home built offshore fishing boats include Hawaiian sampans, mullet skiffs, and larger v bottom Carolina dories. Each has their pluses and minuses, depending on whether speed, economy, or a smooth ride is the more important characteristic.

Sail boats have been around since ancient times. These boats have proven to be a faster and economical way to get around as compared to row boats. The ancient Romans developed a way to have the two techniques combined to form a formidable navy of thousands of galleys. These galleys were rigged with multiple sails that could propel the boat in the wind. The rows were manned by slaves or condemned men and were used when the wind was against the sails and in the opposite direction the boat needed to sail. When man fitted his ship with a sail he probably made the most cost efficient way to travel – Sail and boat.

The wind provides the power that sails the boat. A sail that is well designed can be a good wind trap that propels the boat forward. The sail of the boat must be very strong, usually made from canvas that is very thick and fastened to the mast of the ship with the strongest ropes made from jute and cotton.

The fastest sail boats were the clipper ships. These were ships that relied only on wind power and were designed to use the winds optimum efficiency. The ship itself was designed according to aerodynamics and to offer the least water resistance while sailing. They were very sleek boats with uniquely designed sails.

A boat may have many kinds of sails to propel the boat. The sails are set according to the speed of the wind and the speed the boat needs to travel. There are the foresails, headsails, Genoa, headsail and a Jib. Al the sails of a boat are arranged in a particular order known as a ‘sail plan’. This plan is arranged according to two opposed forces that apply to the ship. The opposition of the water to the movement of the ship and the force of the wind that forces the ship forward. This simple act of tying a sheet to a mast to make a boat move has developed through the ages in to a science of sorts.

The sail of the boat is set according to the purpose of the boat. A race boar will have a particularly designed sail to serve the small boat with good speed and a cruiser will have appropriate sails that will allow the cruiser to sail lazily on the water. The type of sail boat will also depend on the time you intend to sail and where you intend to go. If you want to get out to the deep blue sea you will need sails that will be able to withstand the forces of the sea gales. The type of sail boat you want to use will also be decided by the budget you are willing to put aside for the purchase of the sail boat.

In modern times sail material has changed radically. Ancient sail boats used hand woven sails that were very durable and could easily stand the onslaught of the salty waves and the wind. However, modern sails are made of very durable and lightweight polyester material that is synthetic and can withstand dampness better than the sails made from natural fiber.

Lots of blood, sweat and tears may have gone into producing the first engine after it was commissioned by Montgomery Ward, the Mercury, taking its name form Roman mythology, were off to a good start.

Threatened with closure due to WWII shortage of materials and depleted inventories, the makers, Kiekhaefer Corporation, quickly shifted gears and began supplying for the war effort.

It was all because of one man, a native of Wisconsin, E.C. ‘Carl’ Kiekhaefer, who attended a trade school specializing in practical and automotive electricity. With an interest in all types of farm machinery, he decided to set up shop in 1938 when the Cedarburg Wisconsin plant shut down. With help form his father and townsfolk, Carl took the reins of the plant and decided future production.

With the inventory of engines that came with the takeover, Carl was off to a good start with the Mercury brand name when the war intervened.

He quickly switched over to supplying for the armed forces with generators, chainsaws, compressors, designing and building lightweight engines for four years which helped him also to do research and develop in the area of 2 cycle engine technology. Just after the war ended, Kiekhaefer Corporation’s 1946 model Mercury was on the launching pad.

Requiring more space for expansion, Carl moved his manufacturing facility as well as the headquarters to an acquired dairy farm at Font du Lac in Wisconsin, his home state.

As competition became stiff between Carl’s Kiekhaefer Corporation and Evinrude/Johnson with more and more improved models flooding the market with the outboard speed record set by Mercury in the 1960′s, Carl merged his company with Brunswick Corp in 1961.

The merger had taken care of the money part for Carl, but he found himself increasingly sidelined as he wasn’t in apposition anymore to call the shots. Although he passed away in 1983, soon after deciding to leave the organization he once built on his own, Carl started Kiekhaefer Aeromarine Motors. But promotion of Mercury by Brunswick helped in its being a market leader even today.

The brand Mercury which accidentally Roman mythology helped lend, makes outboard motors, power heads, lower units, outboard propellers, and of course spare parts. Mercury outboard motors range from 2 HP to 350 HP.

Recent introductions by Mercury Marine include the Flyway 25 EFI Four Stroke Outboard, the OptiMax Jet 80 and Jet 110 Outboard engines and the 15 HP Pro Kicker Four stroke Outboard.

And the endurance test of Mercury outboard motors has been seen in grueling power boat races. As recently as the non-stop 24 hour race with stoppages for fuel and driver exchanges only in Rouen, France last May, showed how boats powered by Mercury motors continued winning in such testing events for the 16th time in 17 years.
